Paying Oopbuy in pounds: Wise recharge and UK bank transfers

Two routes accept money that started as sterling without a PayPal step. One publishes almost nothing about its cost; the other publishes a fixed fee that changes which route is cheaper.

01Wise accepts pounds directly

The Top up page opens with Wise, which it also calls Transferwise. Wise recharge supports five currencies: USD, GBP, EUR, NZD and AUD. That makes it the only listed channel where GBP is named outright.

What the page does not say is just as important. There is no Oopbuy fee for Wise, no crediting time, and no statement of which rate turns your pounds into the yuan balance. It is a short paragraph, and we have not padded it.

02Recipient details change with the currency

The second line on the Top up page warns that "different currencies require different recipient information". If you send GBP, use the GBP recipient details shown in your account; sending pounds to the dollar details is the kind of mistake that leaves a payment stuck between two banks.

The details themselves are only visible when you are logged in, so we cannot reproduce them here. Copy them fresh each time rather than reusing an old Wise recipient: banks change.

03What Oopbuy publishes about Wise fees

Nothing. Wise shows its own fee and rate in the app before you send, so you will know what leaves your account. What you will not know in advance is the rate at which Oopbuy credits the yuan balance, or whether any charge comes off on Oopbuy's side.

A practical test: send a modest first amount, note what Wise says left and what appears in the balance, and work out the effective rate yourself. If you do, keep the date with your own payment record.

04Bank remittance fees from a UK account

A separate notice on remittances sets out bank fees. From a Hong Kong account: 0.1% + US$2.5 per transaction. From any other account, which includes a UK bank: 0.1% + US$7. Oopbuy says it charges no service fee of its own; the amount credited is what arrives after bank fees, and you get an email confirming it.

Your UK bank may add its own charge for an international payment on top of that. That depends on your bank and account, not on Oopbuy, so check before you send.

What the historical fee comparison tells you

Applying 4.5% plus $0.30 and 0.1% plus $7 to the same sent amount makes the stated fees equal near $152; using 3.7% instead moves that illustration near $186. These are arithmetic comparisons of dated fee examples, not universal cheapest-provider thresholds.

If you work backwards from a wanted net balance, the result changes with the add-on or deduction formula. Provider conversion, your bank’s fees and current account terms can change it again. The calculator compares complete illustrative totals for the selected assumptions.

06Five transfers a day, twenty yuan minimum

The same notice limits each account to five transfers within 24 hours, each above CNY 20. Submissions past the limit fail automatically. Bank settlement typically takes 2 to 3 working days before the money is credited.

Neither limit is likely to bother a UK buyer making one transfer, but the timing will. If your goods payment is waiting, a transfer sent on Thursday may not credit until the following week.

07Credited in yuan at the website rate

Whatever currency you send, the notice says Oopbuy credits the account in RMB at "the Oopbuy website exchange rate" when the money is received and verified. It refuses overseas RMB remittances outright, and ends with a reminder to pick the currency carefully to avoid exchange losses.

For a UK buyer, compare the currently offered currency routes by total debit and expected credit. Do not assume that sending pounds directly always produces the best result.
